On 10 October in the morning a freight train derailed at Meja railway station near Rijeka in Croatia. Eleven wagons plunged into a ravine, while the locomotive and two derailed wagons remained at the station. No injuries were reported. The accident also caused substantial damage to the embankment and a wind barrier wall.
Due to the significant damage occurred, rail traffic to Rijeka is completely suspended.
Replacement bus service for passenger traffic has already been organized substituting 6 pairs of trains from Rijeka to Plase and vice versa.
For freight traffic the following re-routing option is available, see map below:
Pivka – Ilirska Bistrica (SLO) – Šapjane (HR) – Rijeka.
Re-routing parameters: single track line, electrified (SI:3kV DC; HR: 25 kV AC), P/C 33/349, 20t axle load, 306 m max train length.
Available additional capacity on the re-routing line is 2 freight trains per direction per 24 hours according to the operational working time (line closed from 21:00 to 4:00) and limited capacity on the Slovenian network due to ongoing modernisation works on the Ljubljana – Divača line.
Accepting trains is based on bilateral coordination between the involved Infrastructure Managers.
Restoration work is ongoing; based on HŽI’s estimation, the line will be re-opened by 17 October.
